Verizon said it has not slowed down its 3G withdrawal plan

Verizon has clarified its position on the suspension and shutdown of its 3G network in response to recent media reports. According to Heidi Hemmer, Verizon’s senior vice president of network engineering, the operator is actively managing the network to remove use from 3G infrastructure and reallocate spectrum. Hemmer stressed that the withdrawal plan is still on schedule and will be completed by January 1, 2023.

Verizon’s vice president of network engineering, Cynthia Grupe, stressed that part of the 3G spectrum has been repurposed. Specifically, the 850MHz spectrum previously used for CDMA has been allocated to Verizon’s low-frequency 5G network, which was launched nationwide in late 2020.
